Strange Fruit is a digital work of art. It is comprised of an original work of art and an original poem vignette. American prison artist C-Note calls these works Paintoems (painting + poem). He describes these works as paintings or drawings inspired by poems, or poems inspired by paintings or drawings, combined together to create one work of digital art. To be classified as a Painteom, the work must by licensed or copyrighted under the Creative Commons (CC). In other words, the public has free use rights.

These paintings or drawings with these small poetry vignettes, came about from C-Note's experience working with Prison Art exhibition curators. Prison Art exhibitions are distinguished, in that curators want the public to be exposed to some literary function of the prisoner's voice.

Strange Fruit was a work created to bring awareness of the high suicide rates at one of California's women prisons. The higher than the national average in suicide rates needed to exposed and discussed, this is the role and responsibility of the artist. This is C-Note's guiding principle for utilizing his talents.
