Description
"Prison Stationery," is a work of Graphite and colored pencils on paper by American prison artist Donald "C-Note" Hooker. The text was created by C-Note using a typewriter with a script wheel. It's hard to believe that such an invention exists today, meaning the typewriter. But inside a prison they are vital. Prisoners use this device to file legal appeals, as opposed to file a handwritten petition to the courts. Here, C-Note was appealing for friendship and possible companionship, thus the out-stretched, open hand drawn in graphite, and the yellow rose, as opposed to a red rose, as the Red rose symbolizes romantic love; while the Yellow rose symbolizes friendship. Access to stationery can be highly restricted inside the prison setting, forcing prisoners to come up with ingenious ways to combat the restriction. Here, C-Note created his own stationery, and the text is from an actual letter written by the famed prison artist.
